The Green Zone Home Composting Demonstration Site was developed to provide a permanent educational display about home composting for Spokane area residents. This is a year-round working site, featuring many different types of home compost bins containing yard debris and kitchen vegetable waste in various stages of decomposition.
Leaves, grass clippings, tree trimmings, and pine needles are the most common types of plant material being composted in the variety of homemade and commercial bins on the site. In the display area, two raised flower beds are filled with compost and feature native plants to show one of the good uses for finished compost. Pine needles, abundant in the Spokane area, are used to surface the Demonstration Site.
The Green Zone campus is located at 210 & 222 N. Havana, on the properties of the Spokane County Conservation District and the WSU Spokane County Cooperative Extension Service.
