Overview
Garbage from residences, institutions, and commercial establishments needs to be disposed of properly. The burning of household garbage in burn barrels, stoves, or fireplaces is illegal in the State of Washington. Spokane County's garbage is processed at the Waste to Energy Plant, using state-of-the-art technology to provide electricity through energy recovery.
During the past 35 years, the amount of waste each person creates has almost doubled from 2.7 to 4.4 pounds per day.The most effective way to reverse this trend is to prevent waste in the first place. Waste reduction is the most preferable method of waste management and goes a long way toward protecting the environment.
Waste reduction, often called waste prevention, means consuming less and throwing away less. All products purchased, or at least their packaging or containers, will eventually require disposal. Packaging alone now accounts for 33% of all our garbage. If each person in Spokane County reduced waste by only one pound per week, the amount of reduction county-wide would total over 11,000 tons a year.
In Spokane County, designated haulers provide residential and commercial garbage collection, recycling, and/or yard debris collection service in specific areas. Cities in the county require weekly collection. Variable trash can sizes may be available.
New residents to the area should contact the appropriate provider to start services. The service provider will inform you of your collection day, services provided, and the cost of those services. Please have your garbage at the curb by 6AM on your pick up day.

Litter Control / Illegal Dumping
The Litter Control program in Spokane County began in 1987, funded by a matching grant from Washington State Department of Ecology.Funding is now provided through the Spokane Regional Solid Waste System. Approximately $1.00 from each ton of disposed waste is allocated to the program.
The program in managed by the Spokane Code Enforcement Department. This department works under the direction of several agencies including the City of Spokane Solid Waste Management Department. The Code Enforcement personnel resolve complaints, establish cleanup priorities, and work with neighborhood community groups in numerous City / County cleanup activities.
The program is responsible for abatement of litter and indiscriminate dumping on public owned properties and City / County of Spokane road right-of-ways. The crew provides necessary support to a number of community initiatives such as the community clean-up program, litter removal from illegal camping, recycling materials and educational forums. A crew of three permanent employees work on clean-up activities throughout the year. Two seasonal temporary personnel work on cleanup activities from March through November, weather permitting. A full-time crew foreman provides crew supervision.
An average of 50 tons of letter and 350 tons of illegally dumped material are removed by the crew for disposal each year.
