Educational Programs

The Spokane Regional Solid Waste System offers a variety of educational services and presentations for teachers and students in Spokane County school districts.  Ann Murphy, the Education Coordinator for the Spokane Regional Solid Waste System, coordinates these activities:

Attention Teachers:  
   Recycling RAP  September 2007 (pdf)

Classroom Presentations:

    • Waste Reduction and Packaging
    • Recycling -- The Hows and Whys
    • General Solid Waste Overview
    • Deciphering the Plastic Code
    • Composting
    • Special Activity -- Paper-making -- recycle your classroom waste paper into a new product; an art project with an environmental twist.       
    • Teacher in-service workshops are also available

Waste to Energy Facility Tours:

Free public tours are given every Wednesday and Thursday at 10 am and 1 pm.  To schedule a classroom tour or a tour for 10 or more people, call 509-625-6580.

Community Education:

The Spokane Regional Solid Waste System will provide speakers and/or informational displays at public events upon request. 

Master Composters:

This volunteer program is sponsored by the Spokane Regional Solid Waste System.  Training classes are held every April.  Volunteers offer Compost Fairs at the Arbor Day (April) and Fall Leaf (October) Festivals at Finch Arboretum.  Call the Recycling Hotline for details.

Consultations:

Our experts are available to meet with teachers and/or students to share curriculum and show how to set up school recycling programs.
